The First Large-Scale Green Methanol Project is Approaching its Conclusion
2025-2-20
Recently, a mobilization meeting was held at the site of the Wind Power Coupled with Biomass Green Methanol Integration Demonstration Project in Taonan City, implemented by Shanghai Electric.
This project is the first large-scale commercial operation demonstration project of wind power coupled with biomass green methanol integration in China. It is in the Green Energy and Chemical Industry Park in the western part of Jilin Province (Taonan). The total investment of the project is 5.6 billion yuan. The project adopts the technology of green methanol production through coupling wind power hydrogen production with biomass, and its core technology and key equipment are all independently developed and produced by Shanghai Electric. It has successfully solved technical problems such as large-scale biomass gasification and the coupling of fluctuating green electricity with stable chemical production. Moreover, it has passed the ISCC EU full-process certification, laying a solid foundation for the sales of green methanol. From raw material storage to the final products, the project has achieved carbon emission traceability throughout the whole life cycle, and its technical indicators have reached the international advanced level, providing a replicable and scalable "Shanghai Electric solution" for the development of the national green fuel industry.
The project plans to construct a 250,000-ton wind power coupled with biomass green methanol integration project, with a supporting new energy capacity of 680,000 kilowatts. The power generated is mainly for self-use with a small amount connected to the grid. The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will have a green methanol production capacity of 50,000 tons and officially started construction on March 30, 2024. Currently, the project is in the sprint stage of equipment installation. It is planned to be debugged from April to May 2025, and the first batch of qualified methanol is expected to be produced in June, which will be used in Shanghai in August. It is planned to reach the production capacity of 250,000 tons in 2027.
