Maruzen Petrochemical will Shut down 500,000 Tons of Ethylene Production Capacity in 2026

Maruzen Petrochemical announced on April 1st that its ethylene plant in Chiba, Japan will be closed in 2026, while efforts will be made to optimize the the Keiyo ethylene plant co-founded with Sumitomo Chemical.

In the context of grim market environment of global ethylene oversupply and reduced domestic ethylene demand in Japan, Japan¡äs ethylene plants continue to operate at low loads. To enhance competitiveness, the above decision has been made.

The company¡¯s ethylene plant in Chiba started construction in April 1969, with an ethylene production capacity of 525,000 tons per year.

The Keiyo¡¯s ethylene Plant is a joint venture between Maruzen Petrochemical (holding 55% of the shares) and Sumitomo Chemical (holding 45% of the shares). It started production in December 1994, with an ethylene production capacity of 768,000 tons per year.
