Distributed Photovoltaics Become the Mainstay of New Energy Development in Hunan

2025-6-26

On June 25, the Hunan Energy Association and the Provincial Energy Planning and Research Center jointly released the Hunan Energy Development Report 2025. The report shows that Hunan¡äs energy sector has achieved a high-quality development trend featuring accelerated improvement in production capacity, low-carbon transformation, and utilization efficiency.

This report is the sixth consecutive annual energy report issued since 2020 under the guidance of the Provincial Development and Reform Commission and the Provincial Energy Bureau. The province¡äs energy supply capacity has continued to strengthen. In 2024, the total energy production in Hunan was approximately 43.5 million tons of standard coal, a year-on-year increase of 12.3%. The main reason is the significant increase in hydropower and new energy power generation. Among them, the proportion of hydropower, wind power, and photovoltaic power generation increased to 63.9%, ranking seventh in the country. The stable power supply capacity reached 46.5 million kilowatts, and coal production remained above 9 million tons.

The low-carbon transformation of energy has been comprehensively accelerated. By the end of 2024, the installed capacity of Hunan¡äs power grid was 77.35 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 9.4%. Among them, thermal power installed capacity was 29.51 million kilowatts (28.07 million kilowatts of traditional thermal power and 1.43 million kilowatts of biomass), accounting for 38.2%; wind power and photovoltaic installed capacity was 29.95 million kilowatts, accounting for 38.7%; hydropower (including pumped storage) and new energy storage installed capacity were 17.89 million kilowatts and 2.88 million kilowatts respectively. The installed capacity of wind power and photovoltaics has exceeded that of thermal power for the first time, becoming the largest power source in Hunan.

It is worth noting that the growth of distributed photovoltaic installed capacity accounted for 64.8% of the total growth of wind power and photovoltaic installed capacity, making it the main power source driving the development of new energy.

The report predicts that the total energy consumption in Hunan Province in 2025 will be approximately 176 million tons of standard coal, a year-on-year increase of 2.3%. New energy power generation such as wind power and photovoltaics will continue to grow at a high speed, and the province¡äs energy external dependence will be approximately 74.6%.
