A Large-Scale Salt Cavern Hydrogen Storage Project Launched in Changzhou

2025-8-7

Recently, a national key research and development plan, the large-scale salt cavern hydrogen storage main project, which is a collaboration between China National Salt Industry Group and Tsinghua University, has been officially put into construction in Changzhou, Jiangsu. This project will provide practical samples for solving the bottleneck technology problem of hydrogen gas storage.

Focusing on core issues such as safety, efficiency, and economy of large-scale hydrogen storage, this project sets up five special sub projects to carry out full chain technological research and development around geological evaluation, new material development, cavern structure design, cycle safety regulation, engineering demonstration and verification. It will fill the technical gap in China¡äs hydrogen geological storage.

The large-scale salt cavern hydrogen storage main project that started construction is undertaken by China National Salt Industry Group. It plans to build two sets of salt caverns, forming two hydrogen injection and production wells and two brine injection and discharge wells, as the engineering carrier for large-scale geological hydrogen storage test verification to carry out cyclic hydrogen storage and release performance tests. The project will form a complete technical system for salt cavern hydrogen storage with independent intellectual property rights, laying the foundation for the theoretical research and engineering practice of salt cavern hydrogen storage and promoting its large-scale industrial application.
