Key Facilities at BASF¡äs Zhanjiang Integrated Base Began Operation

2025-10-10

Recently, two major milestones were achieved at the BASF¡äs Zhanjiang integrated base: the successful commissioning of the butyl acrylate plant and the mechanical completion of the ethylene combined plant along with all integrated petrochemical facilities. These accomplishments mark steady progress toward the goal of full-scale operation by the end of 2025.

As early as August 11 of 2025, the butyl acrylate plant at BASF¡äs integrated Zhanjiang base officially commenced operations ahead of schedule, maintaining an outstanding safety record with zero incidents. On August 17, the base successfully delivered the first butyl acrylate materials via tank truck, marking the initial customer delivery after the new plant¡äs commissioning. With a designed annual production capacity of approximately 400,000 tons, this facility will further solidify BASF¡äs leading position in the acrylate market, providing critical raw materials for customers in the adhesive, industrial coatings, and architectural coatings industries.

In addition, the ethylene joint unit and all downstream petrochemical units at BASF¡äs Zhanjiang integrated base, including the ethylene oxide, carbonylation alcohol, syngas, and high-density polyethylene units, went through mechanical completion. This marks the official transition of the project from the construction phase to the operational preparation phase. This milestone ensures that all systems have been installed, connected, and tested, laying a solid foundation for the planned commissioning and startup by the end of 2025.

"The progress made at the Zhanjiang integrated base underscores BASF¡äs unwavering commitment to strengthening its business presence in the Asia Pacific region and delivering long-term value to customers. This world-class integrated production base will significantly enhance our production capacity and supply chain resilience, enabling BASF to provide a wide range of high-quality, reliable, and competitive solutions to customers. As the base is set to commence operations by the end of 2025, we will be better positioned to meet the growing market demand, supporting customers in achieving success with shorter lead times and higher efficiency." Said Bir Darbar Mehta, Senior Vice President of BASF and Head of the Petroleum Chemicals Business Sector in Asia Pacific.

The Zhanjiang integrated base boasts an advantageous geographical location, closely adjacent to the customer base, serving as a strategic cornerstone for BASF in driving the growth of the petrochemical industry across the Asia-Pacific region. As a fully backward-integrated comprehensive facility, the base features a 1-million-ton-per-year ethylene complex and integrated downstream petrochemical units. These facilities are expected to commence operations by the end of 2025, comprehensively meeting the diverse needs of customers across various sectors in the region.
