The Second Phase of the Inner Mongolia Berun Group ¡äs Natural Soda Project Commenced Production
2025-12-12
The second phase of the natural soda project by Berun Group, an Inner Mongolia chemical industry giant, has commenced production in Alxa League, marking a new breakthrough in Inner Mongolia¡äs efforts to establish itself as a globally significant natural soda production base.
The Berun¡¯s Alkali Project has an overall planned construction scale of an annual production capacity of 7.8 million tons of soda ash and 2 million tons of sodium bicarbonate, with the construction site located in the western part of Tamusublag Sumu, Alxa Right Banner, Alxa League, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The project commenced construction in June 2020, with the first phase completed and operational by June 2023, achieving full production capacity and meeting standards the following year.
The Phase II project plans a production capacity of 2.8 million tons of soda ash per year and 400,000 tons of baking soda per year. A total of three alkali processing production lines will be constructed, utilizing the monohydrate alkali processing technology along with the self-developed "semialkali" soda ash production technology and high-efficiency evaporation technology, offering advantages of low cost and high efficiency.
The project includes core production facilities such as cogeneration plants and brine extraction and well construction projects, as well as related equipment for production processes like brine concentration, filtration, and calcination. Additionally, it features supporting utilities and auxiliary facilities, including enclosed coal storage sheds and a second-phase residential complex.
The second phase of the project commenced construction at the end of 2023. The soda ash unit was completed in December 2025, with the first production line successfully yielding products on December 9. The remaining production lines will be commissioned sequentially.
It is worth noted that upon reaching full production capacity, the Berun Group¡äs Alxa League natural soda ash project will achieve an annual production capacity exceeding 10 million tons of soda ash and baking soda.
According to reports, by the end of December 2023, Berun Group officially launched the construction of the second phase of the project. In March of the same year, the first 1.5 million tons/year soda ash production line of the first phase had completed all process flows and began outputting soda ash. On April 3, 2024, the project was registered and approved by the Alxa Right Banner Development and Reform Commission, with the construction period set from July 2024 to December 2026.
In March 2025, the project entered the equipment installation phase, with the production and installation of non-standard equipment commencing on-site. At that time, it was planned to achieve mechanical completion by the end of the year. On December 9, 2025, the first 1-million-ton-per-year soda ash production line of the project was put into trial operation, while staff simultaneously conducted debugging and optimization of the facility. On December 11, 2025, the project held an inauguration ceremony. Subsequently, the company will proceed with the trial operation of the remaining production lines based on the performance of this initial line.
The head of Berun Group stated that the completion of the second phase of the Alkali Project not only marks a decisive achievement in Berun¡äs goal of building a world-class soda ash base but also signifies its fulfillment of its investment commitment to Alxa League during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. In the future, we will proactively align with the national dual-carbon strategy, integrate and couple with new energy sources, establish a green industrial chain from green hydrogen to green ammonia and green alcohol, and transition toward greener chemical production.
