Covestro Raises Annual TDI Production Capacity at Shanghai Base to 370,000 Tonnes
2026-2-6
Covestro announced the successful completion of a major capacity expansion and revamp project for its toluene diisocyanate (TDI) production facilities at the Shanghai Integrated Site. This upgrade has raised the annual TDI production capacity from 310,000 tonnes to 370,000 tonnes, a nearly 20% increase, further strengthening Covestro¡¯s position as one of the leading suppliers in the TDI market across the Asia-Pacific region.
This capacity expansion is designed to meet the growing customer demand for TDI. As a key raw material for manufacturing flexible polyurethane foams, TDI is widely used in furniture, mattresses, automotive and other sectors. The on-schedule completion of this revamp project will enable Covestro to deliver more reliable supply assurance to its customers in the Asia-Pacific.
Located in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, Covestro¡¯s Shanghai Integrated Site is among the company¡¯s largest production bases worldwide. The capacity increase was achieved by optimizing existing production processes and infrastructure, a more resource-efficient approach to capacity expansion compared to building new production lines.
Hermann-Josef Doerholt, Global Head of Covestro¡¯s Functional Materials Business Unit, commented: "This achievement demonstrates our growth strategy through smart and efficient investments, creating maximum value for our customers. It also further enhances Covestro¡¯s global TDI production network, which also includes world-class plants in Dormagen, Germany and Baytown, Texas, USA, ensuring we can deliver reliable services to customers in all major regions."
