World¡¯s First 80,000-Ton CCUS Polyether Project Officially Put into Production
2026-3-23
On March 22, 2026, the 80,000-ton-per-year industrial plant for CO₂-based polyether, developed by ChangHua Chemical Technology Co.,Ltd. was officially commissioned. This milestone marks the commercial launch of China¡¯s first CO₂-based polyether production line capable of stable ten-thousand-ton continuous supply, and also represents China¡¯s first scalable industrial solution for the green and low-carbon transformation of the global polyurethane industry.
The significance of this project extends far beyond capacity expansion; it represents an industrial breakthrough in the ¡°utilization¡± stage of CCUS technology. Adopting advanced low-pressure and low-temperature synthesis processes, the project converts CO₂, a greenhouse gas, into high-performance polypropylene carbonate polyol (PCE), realizing the value upgrading of carbon resources from the ¡°emission side¡± to the ¡°manufacturing side¡±. For the first time, carbon has entered the mainstream supply chain of bulk chemical materials as a basic raw material.
Carnol® CO₂-based polyether has achieved dual breakthroughs in product performance and environmental benefits. Compared with traditional fossil-based polyethers, its carbon footprint can be reduced by up to approximately 30%. The project is expected to reduce annual CO₂ emissions by 147,000 tons, equivalent to the annual absorption capacity of about 4,028 hectares of forest (roughly 5,639 football fields). Meanwhile, the material features excellent film-forming properties, flexibility and wear resistance, alongside low VOC emissions, as well as being degradable and renewable.
Against the backdrop of advancing China¡¯s ¡°Dual Carbon¡± goals (carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060) and tightening international policies such as the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), low-carbon materials are becoming a key factor in global industrial chain competition.
