Pertamina New Energy Proposes Pilot for Biogas-to-Biomethanol Project
2026-4-27
Recently, Pertamina New Energy announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore-based EcoCleen Technologies to explore the construction of a pilot biogas-to-biomethanol facility in the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone on Indonesia¡¯s Sumatra Island. Leveraging its proprietary CRecREF catalytic technology, EcoCleen Technologies can convert carbon-containing gases into high-value chemicals and fuels, supporting decarbonization and the development of green chemistry.
This collaboration marks a key step for Indonesia to optimize its domestic renewable energy resources and unlock the potential of biogas. It will not only drive the research and development of a new generation of green fuels but also enhance Indonesia¡¯s position in the global clean energy supply chain, while supporting decarbonization in the shipping sector and adding value to local resources.
According to Pertamina New Energy, the partnership is a major initiative for the company to develop clean energy based on domestic resources. With abundant feedstocks such as palm oil waste and broad market demand, the cooperation is expected to build a competitive green fuel industrial chain with the partner¡¯s advanced technology, advancing the project from pilot to large-scale commercialization and improving Indonesia¡¯s green energy ecosystem. The two parties will jointly conduct a feasibility study; if progress goes smoothly, the catalytic technology will be applied at the Sei Mangkei biogas power plant. EcoCleen Technologies noted that its technology enables the on-site conversion of low-quality biogas into high-value green chemicals without the significant capital investment required for conventional methanol plants. By partnering with local enterprises to leverage Indonesia¡¯s abundant biogas resources, the project aims to translate resource advantages into commercial biomethanol supply.
