Site Confirmed for Europe¡¯s First Alcohol-to-SAF Plant

2026-5-21

LanzaTech Global has recently announced that Europe¡¯s first commercial-scale project producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from alcohol will be built at the North Sea Port in Ghent, Belgium. With a total investment of 500 million euros, the facility will have an annual output of 79,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel and 9,000 tons of renewable diesel, adopting LanzaJet¡¯s exclusive alcohol-to-jet fuel technology.

As part of the FLITE Low-Carbon Ethanol-to-Fuel Consortium, the project is funded under the EU Horizon 2020 programme. The company is set to submit the scoping notice for environmental impact assessment to Belgian competent authorities, clearing major hurdles ahead of the investment decision phase.

Officials of North Sea Port stated that the project aligns with the port¡¯s 2030 development plan as well as the green and low-carbon development goals of Ghent City and Flanders Region. According to senior executives of LanzaTech, Ghent boasts a sound industrial ecosystem and abundant cooperative resources. Adjacent to ArcelorMittal¡¯s Steelanol plant, it enjoys prominent advantages in raw material supply. Front-end engineering design has been largely completed, while plant location, raw material supply and product off-take frameworks have all been finalized. Fuels produced by the project fully comply with standards under CORSIA, as well as mandatory low-carbon jet fuel regulations of the EU and the UK, enabling easy access to high-end compliant global markets. It is expected to become a key pillar of Europe¡¯s sustainable aviation fuel supply system.
