Progress of Dow Chemical′s Combined Polyether Polyols Renovation Project

2024-3-8

Dow Chemical (Zhangjiagang) Co., Ltd., an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Dow Chemical Company in the United States, was established on April 11, 1998 in the Jiangsu Yangtze River International Chemical Industrial Park in Zhangjiagang. Over the years, it has successfully completed projects including a 120,000 tons/year alcohol ether production project, a 10,000 tons/year technical upgrading project for electronic grade propylene glycol methyl ether, a pier construction project, and a 120,000 tons/year combined polyether polyols project.

After years of development, the traditional production technology of combined polyether polyols has gradually matured, and external competition has continued to increase, resulting in a gradual decline in Dow Chemical′s competitive advantage. In addition, labor costs and raw material costs have been constantly rising in recent years, leading to a gradual decline in the profitability of Dow Chemical′s products.

On the demand side of polyurethane raw materials, downstream industries such as refrigerators and water heaters are gradually entering a bottleneck period. Therefore, Dow Chemical needs to improve its existing products to enhance its product advantages and profitability, ease its competitive pressure. Externally, it can drive the company′s sustainable operations and a new round of development.

Technical Renovation Measures: Dow Chemical plans to renovate its existing combined polyether polyols production line to produce high-quality, low-energy, green, and environmentally friendly combined polyether polyols. The polyurethane products produced from this high-quality combined polyether polyols (using water-based polyurethane dispersions as the key raw material) are free of solvent, organic amines, freon, and other residues, and have advantages such as wear resistance, uniform and stable particle size distribution of raw materials. Therefore, high-quality combined polyether polyols can be applied to higher-end and more diverse polyurethane product industries, such as leather, coatings, runways, and other scenarios where humans have close contact.
